Shelly and Dwayne had both volunteered with organizations in the past, and in 2020, they began searching for a cat to adopt through a local rescue. While browsing online, they came across Cookie and immediately felt a connection. “We just knew she was the one,” they shared.

After adopting Cookie, Shelly spent time learning more about the rescue work, which inspired her to get involved as a volunteer. This led to helping with various initiatives, including the annual garage sale. A few years later, when Dwayne retired, he was looking for something meaningful to fill his time and decided to join as a volunteer as well.

One of their favorite ways to give back has been through garage sale events. “They’re large, community-driven efforts that take a lot of volunteers to make successful, and we really enjoy being part of that,” they explained. Last year, they volunteered at the Central Alberta Humane Society (CAHS) garage sale for the first time. “We enjoyed it so much that we’re excited to return this year and are already looking into other ways we can help.”

In addition to volunteering, they support the organization by attending as many fundraising events as possible. They are passionate about contributing to animal rescues, recognizing the vital role these organizations play, and the ongoing need for community support. “These services are so important, and they rely heavily on volunteers and community involvement to care for the animals.”

For Shelly and Dwayne, adopting Cookie was more than just bringing home a pet, it was the start of something bigger. “We didn’t just welcome a new cat into our family; we became part of a whole community.”
