Meet Vanessa! She started volunteering with the CA Humane Society in October 2024. She was searching for things to do in her retirement, saw the opening for cat cuddlers, and was sold. What better way to spend a few hours a day than by having a purring cat curl up in your lap.
“I love seeing the transformations as they become more confident and show their personalities. Cats like Rizzo who at first was timid and unsure and now purrs as soon as I open her cage and pick her up. She loves playing in Riley’s room and even agrees to being brushed.”
Vanessa says that her time with the cats is healing, no matter how her day is going or how high her anxiety is, hanging out with the cats is calming and helps put life into perspective.
“The only downside of the role is getting too attached. When I come in and see a favorite friend gone there is a moment is sadness, but it is quickly replaced with joy for them finding a forever home. When my living situation changes, and I am able to get a cat again there will be some very hard choices to make.”
“Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, staff and the community at large for your support of the CA Humane Society. I’m honored to be your volunteer of the month.”
Vanessa, we are so grateful for the love and dedication you bring to our shelter cats! Your compassion and patience help so many shy and unsure kitties build confidence and find comfort in human companionship. Seeing transformations like Rizzo’s is a testament to the incredible impact you make.
