Volunteers are an important part of the Central Alberta Humane Society. We need volunteers to help with our events and also to assist with everyday operations.
All of the volunteer positions we have are important to us and especially to the animals. It is critical for the animals to have the love, affection, exercise, and socialization they deserve.
Thank you for everything you do for our animals and our community! Volunteers like you genuinely change the world, and we are so grateful.
If you’d like to make a big impact on homeless animals in central Alberta, consider becoming a foster family. The ability to provide a temporary home to a shelter animal in need is an immensely rewarding experience. You are providing an animal the knowledge and love it needs to survive as you lead them over the bridge to their forever home.
Step 1: Application & Review
You will fill out the appropriate volunteer application for the role you are interested in (see below for forms and program information). If you are in the general Cat Cuddling/Pocket Pets Program or 18+ and interested in our Dog Enrichment/Walking Program you can apply online via the button below. Please allow our Volunteer Coordinator up to 2 weeks to review and process your application.
Please note: Different programs may have different application forms, so ensure you are filing out the correct forms when you are applying (Youth Volunteers and Assisted Volunteers will have an extra form for their Support Staff or Guardian). An application cannot be processed until all necessary forms have been filled out.
Step 2: Orientation & Training
After your application is approved you will be contacted and scheduled for an orientation. Orientations are where volunteers receive all training required for their program, a name tag, tour, and an account with our volunteer software Better Impact. Orientations typically run once a month per program and fill up quickly. Ensure you are following the steps outlined to claim your spot!
Step 3: Start Volunteering!
Following your approved application and orientation, you’ll be able to schedule and view your upcoming volunteer shifts through our online volunteer portal. Volunteers use this to track hours, schedule shifts, communicate, and more! Accepted volunteers are required to volunteer a minimum of 1hr per week in their respective program. The shelter is open 7 days a week to volunteers to make this goal achievable.
We are so excited to have you on our team and can’t wait to meet you!
By volunteering at the Central Alberta Humane Society, you can add to the quality of animals’ lives and enhance the quality of your life too! As the largest animal welfare organization in central Alberta, we rely on the assistance of volunteers to care for the many animals that are in our care. Please look at our volunteer programs below for more detailed information.
Cat cuddling offers volunteers the opportunity to enrich the lives of the cats and kittens in our shelter. Enrichment activities include brushing, playing, petting, and providing treats, all of which help our cats build confidence, become comfortable with people, and develop the social skills that will support them in their future forever homes.
We also have small animals, or “Pocket Pets,” such as bunnies, guinea pigs, and more who benefit from interaction and care. Volunteers must be 14 years or older to work with our cats and pocket pets. For younger animal enthusiasts, please explore our Youth Volunteer Program for additional volunteer opportunities.
Are you ready to help our shelter dogs enjoy much-needed time outside time while bonding and sharing some exercise? We’re seeking volunteers to enrich the lives of our dogs with daily walks and playtime. Volunteers begin with in-shelter enrichment, and after 10 hours, they can take dogs out on our scenic trail system!

The CA Humane Youth Volunteer Program offers young animal enthusiasts (ages 10-13) the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with our shelter cats, assisting with laundry/dishes, and completing other important shelter tasks. Youth volunteers participate under the supervision of a parent or guardian, who must accompany them during all volunteer activities.
The Cat Cuddling/Pocket Pets Program includes enrichment activities such as brushing, playing, petting, giving our cats treats, and helping our feline population build confidence and social skills that will ease their transition to loving forever homes.
To apply, please complete the Youth Volunteer Application and Guardian Application forms below and email them to volunteer@cahumane.com
The CA Humane Assisted Volunteer Program welcomes volunteers aged 14 and older who require the support of a personal caregiver. Assisted Volunteers, alongside their Support Staff (not provided by CA Humane), contribute by engaging with our shelter cats, assisting with laundry, and performing other essential tasks. Support Staff must accompany Assisted Volunteers during all activities.
The Cat Cuddling/Pocket Pets Program includes enrichment activities such as brushing, playing, petting, giving our cats treats, and helping our feline population build confidence and social skills that will ease their transition to loving forever homes.
To apply, please complete the Assisted Volunteer Application and the Support Staff Application form below and email them to [email protected]
CA Humane is a charity, non-profit organization and relies on donations/fundraisers to make up the money that will keep the shelter running throughout the year. Volunteers are key for these events to occur as we do not have enough staff and want them to focus on our in-shelter animals. These events vary and so do the volunteer requirements. If you would like to be added to an email list to know when these are occurring, please email [email protected]
Is your company looking to give back to the community while team building? Email [email protected] to book a time to come in and volunteer! This will include a short presentation about CA Humane, cat enrichment, dog enrichment, and some cleaning tasks such as laundry or sweeping. We recommend coming into the shelter for 2 hours so that your team has enough time to complete all areas. CA Humane looks forward to hosting your team!
