Carl and Rufus's Adoption Story
Carl and Rufus were among the group of coonhounds who came to CA Humane in November 2021. Those who were familiar with these coonhounds probably remember Carl as the black, white, and brown hound who was always jumping to the top of his kennel whenever he got excited, and Rufus as the big, friendly, reddish gold one who loves belly rubs.
We adopted Carl in May of 2022, and he settled in immediately as a wonderful family member. At first, he was in bed by 7pm every day because he was so accustomed to his routine at the shelter. Carl had seemed so crazy and energetic in the shelter, and we were surprised at how calm he is at home. Carl hiked his first mountains that summer, and it is no surprise that he is an excellent hiker with great climbing skills. Carl loves the views from hills and mountains. Carl is sweet, sensitive, and can be timid at times. He loves hiking, walks, running around with toys (and especially opening them 😊), hugs, sitting on the couch, and listening to 60s R & B.
In January 2023, Rufus came back to the Humane Society, and he was still as sweet and friendly as ever. From the moment we welcomed Rufus into our home, he and Carl have been inseparable. Within minutes of arriving home, they were joyfully playing in the back yard. They happily share everything and have become best friends.
Rufus is calm, confident, loving, and friendly. During the months he has been with us, Rufus has become even more playful and goofy. He loves to race around, especially in tall grass, and likes tumbling and wrestling with Carl. He enjoys hugs, belly rubs, and playing with his favourite soft toys. Rufus has a wildly wagging tail that can clear a coffee table in seconds, and he joyfully wiggles his whole body when he is happy (which is often!). Rufus tends to be laid back and relaxed, and his calming influence helps Carl be more confident, too. Rufus recently climbed his first mountain, and he loved it! Rufus was equally athletic, and he enjoyed the views just as much as Carl did.
Carl and Rufus enjoy going to the dog park and experiencing various outdoor adventures. They are amazing fast runners and make a great team pulling a little sled. Although they love to be active, Carl and Rufus also spend much of their time relaxing. They especially enjoy resting on the couch, and we have been known to sit on the floor to make room for the two of them to stretch out.
Carl and Rufus have some similar mannerisms and look alike in many ways (especially their nearly identical paws!). Given their similarities and that they had originally come from the same place, we suspected that Carl and Rufus were related. DNA tests confirmed that they are brothers!
It is touching to see how they love each other so much. Carl and Rufus must have been friends before they were rescued, and it is obvious that they are thrilled to be together again. We are glad that these two brothers have been reunited, and so grateful to have these wonderful dogs as part of our family. They bring us much joy, and our life is richer because Carl and Rufus are in it. We look forward to many more adventures together.
